Is Video Therapy Really Therapy?

A leather notebook, fountain pen, reading glasses and a cup of coffee on a linen desk

A question I often hear about online therapy in Texas: does it feel as real as sitting across from someone in an office? For many people, it does. Some find they speak more openly from a place where they already feel at ease. What makes therapy meaningful is not the room. It is the attention, the steadiness, and the willingness on both sides to look honestly at what is happening. Those qualities travel well over a secure video connection.

A few things that help a video session feel grounded:

  • A private space with a door that closes.
  • Headphones, so you can speak freely.
  • A few quiet minutes before we begin, rather than stepping straight out of a meeting.
  • Permission to pause.

Silence is part of the work, on screen too. I see adults by secure video anywhere in Texas, from my base in Southwest Austin. For busy professionals, this often means therapy fits into a week that has no spare hour for a commute.

If you have been wondering whether this format could work for you, reach out through my website and ask. It is a reasonable question, and I am glad to talk it through.
