Telehealth or In-Person Therapy?

Both formats can support serious, thoughtful work. The better choice depends on your space, your schedule, and what helps you feel present.

Two Formats, the Same Work

Whichever format you choose, the work itself is the same. Individual sessions last 50 to 60 minutes and cost $210. The approach is the same collaborative, direct, and attentive style, and sessions are available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. What changes is the setting, and the setting can matter more than you might expect. In both formats, the essentials are the same: a consistent time, a private space, and enough room in your day to arrive and leave without rushing.

How In-Person Sessions Work

In-person sessions take place at FUSE WorkSpace, 13341 W Hwy 290, Austin, TX 78737, on West Highway 290 in Southwest Austin. It is a private, quiet room with easy parking. Coming to the office gives the hour a clear beginning and end, in a place that belongs to neither your work nor your home. The drive can become part of the ritual: a few minutes to shift out of work mode on the way in, and to reflect on the way home. You can read more on Therapy in Southwest Austin.

How Telehealth Sessions Work

Telehealth sessions take place by secure video on HIPAA-compliant platforms, and they are available anywhere in Texas. Because my license covers Texas only, you must be located in Texas during each session, wherever you happen to live. Sessions start and end at the scheduled time, just as they would in the office, so it helps to protect the appointment the way you would protect an in-person meeting. Online Therapy Across Texas describes how it works in more detail.

When In Person May Suit You Better

In-person sessions may be the better fit if:

  • You do not have a private space at home or at work where you will not be overheard.
  • You want a clear boundary between therapy and the rest of your day.
  • Screen fatigue after long workdays makes video sessions feel draining.
  • Some conversations feel easier to have in a room together.
  • You live or work near Southwest Austin and the trip fits your week.

When Telehealth May Suit You Better

Telehealth may be the better fit if:

  • Your schedule leaves little room for travel before or after a session.
  • You live elsewhere in Texas, far from the office.
  • Health, mobility, or caregiving makes getting out difficult.
  • You want continuity during busy seasons or while traveling within Texas.
  • You feel most at ease speaking from a familiar, private space.

Questions to Ask Yourself

If you are still unsure, these questions can help you notice what matters most to you right now:

  • Do I have a private space where I can speak freely?
  • What does my schedule realistically allow in a typical week?
  • Do I feel more at ease in a room with someone, or in my own space?
  • Would the trip to Southwest Austin feel like a helpful transition or an added burden?
  • Will I be located in Texas at the times I want to meet?

Making a Video Session Feel Grounded

A little preparation helps a video session feel protected. Choose a room with a door that closes, and use headphones so the conversation stays yours. A stable connection and a device you control, rather than a shared work computer, make a difference too. Give yourself a few quiet minutes before we begin, instead of stepping straight out of a meeting, and silence notifications. It is also fine to pause, to take a breath, or to sit in silence together, on screen as in a room.

If you wonder whether video can offer real depth, the Journal post Is Video Therapy Really Therapy? explores that question.

Switching Between Formats

You do not have to choose one format forever. You can meet in the office some weeks and online in others, as your schedule and energy change. You might start in person and move online during a demanding season, or the reverse. We can plan changes together, and the same scheduling policy applies to both formats: cancellations need 24 hours' notice to avoid a $90 late fee.

When Life Changes Mid-Course

A move within Texas, a new job, a health change, or a demanding season at work can all change what works best. Because both formats are available, therapy does not have to pause when your circumstances shift. If you move away from Austin but stay in Texas, we can continue by video. If you move outside Texas, we would need to talk about next steps, since sessions require you to be located in Texas. Raising these changes early gives us time to plan.

Privacy in Both Settings

Sessions are confidential within the limits of the law, whether we meet in person or online. The office is a private room reserved for our time together, and telehealth takes place on secure, HIPAA-compliant platforms. With video, part of privacy is also on your side of the screen, which is why the space you choose matters. If privacy at home is difficult, that alone may be a reason to meet in person.

Deciding Together

If you are unsure which format fits, bring the question to the free 15-minute consultation. We can look at your schedule, your space, and what helps you feel most present, and decide from there. There is no wrong answer, and the choice you make now can change later as your life does. You can see the communities near the office on Areas Served, or book a consultation from Work With Me.
