Immigrants and Bicultural Professionals

Therapy for Immigrants and Bicultural Professionals

Living between cultures can be a strength and a strain at the same time. Therapy can make room for both.

Living Between Two Worlds

If you immigrated to the United States, or grew up between the culture of your family and the culture around you, you may move between worlds every day. At work, you may speak one way and meet one set of expectations. At home, or with your community, the rules can be different. That fluency is a real skill. It can also be tiring, especially when you feel you must translate yourself constantly, or when neither world sees all of who you are. Therapy offers a place where you do not have to choose one version of yourself to be understood.

Culturally Attentive Care

Culturally attentive therapy means I do not assume that your family, faith, values, or goals should look a particular way. It means asking rather than presuming, and taking seriously the context that shaped you: migration, language, community expectations, and the history your family carries. Sharing a language does not mean sharing an experience, and I bring genuine curiosity to your particular story. Therapy can hold respect for your background alongside honest reflection about the parts of it you want to keep and the parts you may want to change.

The Weight of Expectations

You may carry the hopes of people who sacrificed a great deal so that you could have opportunities they did not. That can be a source of pride and motivation. It can also turn every setback into something heavier, and make rest feel like ingratitude. You may be the first in your family to work in your field, which can mean navigating unwritten rules without a guide. We can look at how those expectations shape your choices, your stress, and your sense of worth, and consider how to honor your family without disappearing inside their hopes. Burnout and leadership stress may also speak to you.

Belonging and Identity at Work

Being bicultural can come with experiences of being misunderstood, stereotyped, or treated as an outsider, at work and beyond. You may adjust your accent, your humor, or your opinions to fit in, and then feel the cost of that adjustment at the end of the day. These experiences can affect confidence, mood, and the energy it takes to show up. They deserve a space where they are taken seriously. We can explore how they affect you, what helps you stay grounded, and how you want to respond, while also making room for the richness of a layered identity.

Family Across Borders

Your family may be spread across countries and time zones. You may send support home, worry about aging parents far away, or miss celebrations and losses you could not attend in person. Grief can be complicated when distance keeps you from being present. Therapy can hold these realities alongside the demands of your daily life, helping you set sustainable limits without abandoning the people and places that formed you. You can read more about grief therapy and relocation and expat life.

Therapy in English, Spanish or Portuguese

I am originally from Venezuela, I have relocated internationally five times, and I work in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. You are welcome to use whichever language gives your experience the most room, and to move between languages within a session. You can read about this part of my practice in Terapia en español, Terapia em português, or Therapy in Spanish and Portuguese.

A Place for All of You

Bicultural life is not a problem to be solved. It can bring perspective, adaptability, humor, and depth. In therapy, we can make room for the difficult parts without losing sight of the strengths your history has given you. Sessions take place in person at FUSE WorkSpace on West Highway 290 in Southwest Austin or by secure video anywhere in Texas. A free 15-minute consultation is a simple place to begin, in the language you prefer.
